Eden – lost in music

Heute melden wir uns mit einer Filmempfehlung. Zurzeit könnt ihr „Eden – lost in music“ in der ARD Mediathek streamen. Obwohl der Film bereits 2014 erschienen ist, habe ich bisher noch nichts von diesem Film gehört oder gelesen. Auch in den vielen Listen über Filme der Club- und DJ-Kultur der großen Blogs taucht dieses Werk eher selten auf. Dabei ist gerade der Soundtrack ein Genuss.

Im Mittelpunkt des Films steht Paul Vallée. Ein junger Pariser DJ und Produzent, welcher vom New Yorker House Sound der 90er fasziniert ist. Der Film zeigt aber nicht nur die Entwicklung des einzelnen Künstlers, sondern auch die Veränderungen in der französischen House-Szene. Dabei werden in der ersten halben Stunde gerade Fans des kürzlich getrennten Duos Daft Punk auf ihre Kosten kommen. In einer Nebenhandlung werden die Anfänge des wohl größten Exportschlagers der französischen Electro-Szene gezeigt. Ikonisch ist vor allem die Szene, in der die beiden auf einer House Party ihren ersten Hit „Da Funk“ anscheinend das erste Mal vor Publikum ausprobieren. Auch im weiteren Verlauf des Films bleibt der Name Daft Punk präsent. Immer wieder kann man Anspielungen auf das Duo entdecken und natürlich finden auch weitere Hits wie „one more time“ und „quo vadis“ ihren Platz im Soundtrack. Doch auch Freunde des New Yorker Garage Sounds werden ihre Freude haben. Vor allem während der Amerika Tour des Protagonisten, werden einige Klassiker zum Besten gegeben.

Auf der inhaltlichen Ebene bleibt der Film meiner Meinung nach jedoch schwach und die Handlung ist etwas langatmig. Dennoch fängt der Film die Atmosphäre dieser Zeit gut ein und eignet sich bestens, um sich für bevorstehende Partys musikalisch inspirieren zu lassen.

Although the film was already released in 2014, I have not yet heard or read anything about this film. Even in the many lists about films of club and DJ culture of the major blogs, this work appears rather rarely. Yet the soundtrack in particular is a delight.

At the center of the film is Paul Vallée. A young Parisian DJ and producer who is fascinated by the New York house sound of the 90s. The film shows not only the development of the individual artist, but also the changes in the French house scene. In the process, fans of the recently separated duo Daft Punk in particular will get their money’s worth in the first half hour. A subplot shows the beginnings of what is probably the biggest export of the French electro scene. Especially iconic is the scene in which the two apparently try out their first hit “Da Funk” in front of an audience at a house party. The name Daft Punk remains present in the further course of the film as well. Again and again one can discover allusions to the duo and of course other hits like “one more time” and “quo vadis” find their place in the soundtrack. But also friends of the New York garage sound will have their pleasure. Especially during the American tour of the protagonist, some classics are given to the best.

On the content level, however, the film remains weak in my opinion and the plot is a bit long-winded. Nevertheless, the film captures the atmosphere of this time well and is ideally suited to get musically inspired for upcoming parties.
